Biotrace Software is a dynamic family business based in Bloemfontein. The development is outsourced to a local software development company. Johann de Jager, the system architech, has been involved in short term insurance since 1984 and wrote his first system in 1995. Up to 1998 he and his spouse, Zelda, owned their own brokerage. During 1998 they amalgamated with another short term insurance brokerage and soon became involved in portfolio- and underwriting management. During this time Johann was very much involved in risk management and product development and had written a personal lines policy wording still used by some underwriting managers. He also acted as a technical consultant for some software developers who still uses schedule layouts as their default printouts.
